Longwood Mansion: A Mississippi Marvel

The Deep South is full of beautiful and unique plantation homes and Longwood in Natchez, MS just might be the most surprising. But don’t let the outside of this huge and ornately-detailed octagon-shaped Missississippi masterpiece fool you…

Construction on Longwood, owned by plantation owners Haller and Julia Nutt, began in the spring of 1860. The exterior was virtually complete at the beginning of the Civil War. However, work on the interior was soon halted as workers began fearing for their safety due to the War. Only the basement was completed. Today, the mansion sits untouched as a National Historic Landmark with the interior still a shell of what it was planned to be.

I went on a tour of this mansion on a trip to Natchez, and I was in awe by the whole experience. We weren’t allowed to take many photos of the inside, but the photos I did capture are still very compelling.
