Prenatal Massage: NOLA Therapy Room Breaks Down the Benefits

Pregnancy is tough on your body, no doubt about it! It has every ounce of you working in overdrive as it creates that adorable bundle of joy growing inside you. That’s why it’s important for us pregnant gals to take the time to pamper ourselves. A prenatal massage is a great way to relax while helping your body recharge. But what exactly is a prenatal massage and what are the benefits of getting one?

I visited NOLA Therapy Room to learn more about the prenatal massage and to try one out for myself. I must say…it was fantastic!

Owner, Tedra Chaney gave Southern Chick Journal the low down on the prenatal massage in this Q&A session:

Big thanks to NOLA Therapy Room for teaming up with Southern Chick Journal for this feature

1- How is prenatal massage different from other massages? What techniques are used?

Prenatal massage is geared directly for the Mom to be. She’s accommodated with pillows to cradle her head, growing abdomen and hips for her comfort. It’s usually performed with her in a side lying position, but there are specialty tables out there as well.

2- How does this massage benefit mom?

PM reduce stress and tension and helps to alleviate low back pain often associated with pregnancy due to the widening of the hips.  It also helps to calm that nervous energy that some expectant mothers feel because of the uncertainties they face as it relates to childbirth and life after.

3- How does this massage benefit baby?

Studies have shown that babies whose mother’s received regular Prenatal Massages had much easier deliveries, with lower C-Section rates. A calm momma makes for a calm baby.

4- Is it safe?

Prenatal Massage is 100% safe for expectant mothers. As Massage Therapists, we do take several safety precautions. For instance, there are certain body parts that are considered to be local contradictions during a Prenatal Massage and we will absolutely stay away from those areas. Just as there are certain Essential Oils that we would avoid using during treatment.  And as with any service, it’s always best to consult with your physician before proceeding.

5- How often do you suggest a pregnant woman have a massage?

This is dependent on her needs. Some women breeze through pregnancy without so much as a cramp, while others, like myself, suffer immensely with low back pains, leg cramps, etc.  That means, some will come weekly, while others bi-weekly or even monthly. It’s largely dependent on her physical and mental needs as well as her budget.

6- What type of prenatal massage packages do you offer?

We offer 50-minute Prenatal sessions for $79 each, or you can purchase a “Prenatal Pamper Package” which includes 2 Prenatal and 1 Postnatal Massage for $225 plus a “Bundle of Joy” Gift Basket.

We also offer Delivery Day services to help Mom so that baby can make an easier transition into the world.
