When I heard Hamilton was coming to New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre for a stop on its national tour, I did not “throw away my shot” and purchased two tickets for a special date night with my husband (glad we got them early, the show sold out).
Practicing my Hamilton pose. Not throwing away my shot to see this musical!
Yes, the play was fantastic and even better than I had thought it would be. With its outstandingly-talented and culturally diverse cast, amazing tongue-twisting song lyrics, and a story that pulls you in from the very first song, I completely understand why this broadway musical continues to captivate sell-out audiences around the globe.
But what could make a magical play even more magical? Watching it in a beautiful historic venue like the Saenger Theatre in downtown New Orleans! I love living in New Orleans and our Hamilton date night didn’t disappoint. More on the show and venue in a minute…first, drinks…
Me and Lon head for pre-show cocktails at Monkey Board, a new rooftop bar in downtown New Orleans.
Watching the sunset from the rooftop bar.
Cocktails with a view! And just a quick walk away from the Saenger Theatre.
Wine sippin’ at Monkey Board.
I loved this sign outside the elevator at the bar. A cute photo opp!
The show was at the Saenger Theatre in downtown New Orleans. Built in 1927, the Saenger was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina…then reopened in 2013 after a big $53 million restoration project. The theatre is gorgeous and a perfect spot for Hamilton.
Walking into the Saenger Theatre for Hamilton. Glad we got tickets!
The sign lights up Canal Street! Love it!
Inside, your eyes are instantly drawn up to the soaring ceiling, complete with beautiful chandeliers, gorgeous moldings and ornate painted details everywhere.
The interior atmospheric design creates a magnificent 15th century Italian courtyard and gardens, with arched surroundings, columns and decorative moldings.
Inside the theatre is magical! We had balcony seats under a canopy of twinkling stars! Greek and Roman statuary line the walls and statues of Venus stand on pedestals along the upper rim of the auditorium.
The cast was amazingly talented. They certainly “broke a leg” during the performance!
Sometimes, I find myself taking the beautiful city of New Orleans, the place I call home, for granted. The history and charm of this city really captures the soul. And it was nice to be reminded of that again when we went on our Hamilton date night at the Saenger Theatre!
Been a while since you’ve been out? Plan a special night in your town to reignite the love for your city, too! Visit a new restaurant, take an evening stroll through downtown, watch the sunset from a cute bar or cafe, it’s a fun way to reconnect and rediscover what makes your home so special.
